NAMM 2012 Event Report: Recap & Highlights

by Don Rose

-

If there is one thing to say about NAMM (the annual National Association of Music Merchants show - the largest and longest-running musical instruments and products trade show in the United States), it has something for everyone! No matter what music you are making, what strings you strum, what drum you drum, what horn you blow, what keyboard you adore, you sure won’t get bored!

NAMM is simply the largest, most diverse event related to music making, music technology and musical instrument selling you will see in one place. The annual trade show is the place where music products retailers meet face-to-face with manufacturers to make their biggest purchases and gain product knowledge for their stores in the year ahead. Throughout the four days of business deals, educational sessions and live music performances, the mood of the show was energetic and positive.

In a word (or two): NAMM ROCKS! (Literally, since the many after-show parties often feature top name acts. Even during the show there were rockers, like Alice Cooper, who signed at the Shure booth, and Kenny Loggins, who did an intimate acoustic set at another booth.) NAMM also has a tradition of spotlighting up and coming musical acts of all genres, giving a well-attended platform for breakthrough rising stars to shine.

At show close, NAMM reported 95,709 registered attendees, a six percent increase from last year and representing a new record for the 110-year-old show. International registration also experienced a 15 percent increase from last year to 11,981. The association previously reported strong exhibitor numbers, with 1,441 exhibitors at this year’s show, including 236 new exhibitors.

”Once again the NAMM Show served as the crossroads for musical instrument and live sound products manufacturers, retailers and their guests from all over the world,” said NAMM President and CEO Joe Lamond. “We are extremely grateful to all of the NAMM Members, music educators, artists, partners and media who made this 110th NAMM Show a resounding success for the industry and a great start to 2012.”

-

As for me, I greatly enjoyed the section downstairs devoted to music-related apps and music technology in general. I expect that section should grow rapidly in future NAMM shows.

Also adding great value to the attendee experience is NAMM University, a series of talks held every year right on the show floor. (How do they do that, you ask, with all the noise from nearby booths? With headsets for each guest!) We liked the talk on GTD - Getting Things Done - the popular time management and personal productivity system.

New ideas, tips, business strategies - all this and more are explored at NAMM U. And if you didn’t get a chance to go (or if you did but want to hear some of the talks again), you can experience NAMM U learning resources all year long, any time, via NAMM U Online - a library of videos, articles and interviews that supplement the popular live Breakfast Sessions and Idea Center Sessions that are held at the NAMM Shows.

-

One of the most active and interesting spots at this year’s Winter NAMM Convention was the PreSonus booth - a non-stop nexus of activity with live performances, technology demonstrations, showcases, and more. But perhaps the biggest buzz was one most attendees were barely aware of. In a tiny 12 x 6 foot room behind the stage, PreSonus staffers were busy streaming the entire show out to the world. While tens of thousands of industry visitors from all corners of the globe converge on the Anaheim Convention Center every year for NAMM, members of the general public have rarely had an opportunity to get inside the show - until now.

Multiple video feeds were fed to a Black Magic switcher in the editing suite, where Video Designer / Producer Paul Charbonnet cranked some serious performance out of three computers at once. “The Black Magic system is mixing directly to a Mac Pro, which gives us our primary program,” Charbonnet explains. “Then we’ve got an iMac and MacBook Pro doing multiple duties including rendering, encoding for the Web, capturing for our YouTube and Vimeo channels, monitoring live chat, and more.”

“We’ve got a multitrack audio split feed coming from the stage into our StudioLive 24.4.2 console,” explains Audio Engineer Mat Criddle. “That enables us to deliver separate, simultaneous mixes for FOH and Webcasting.” Criddle also provided monitor mixes back to the performers, who were able to manipulate their mixes using their iPhones via PreSonus’ new QMix™ wireless technology.

“At the same time, we’re also recording a multitrack feed of the live performances directly into StudioOne,” says Criddle. “So any of our performing artists can take their tracks and do a full mix later on, and create a live recording or music video from their performance here at NAMM.”

-

New and veteran exhibitors alike enjoyed increased foot traffic from quality retail buyers over the four-day NAMM show.

“We’d like to deeply thank NAMM for their incredible support during our first show as exhibitors.” said John R. Gibson, President and CEO, Wi Digital Systems. “Thanks to NAMM, we hit every stretch target, including major media exposure and signing up significant new accounts.”

“We were very pleased to see so much enthusiasm from our dealers at NAMM,” said Courtland Gray, Chief Operating Officer, Peavey Electronics Corporation. “Our new self-tuning Peavey AT-200 guitar, PVX powered speakers, Max Series bass amplifiers and more all made a very positive impression. We’re off to a great start for 2012.”

“We are extremely pleased with our experience during the 2012 NAMM Show,” said Jason Padgitt, senior vice president, marketing and communications for Fender Musical Instruments Corporation. “The enthusiasm we have received on all of our new products from our family of brands has been terrific.”

“The show was noticeably better in attendance this year,” said Rick Young, Yamaha Corporation of America. “We were consistently packed Thursday through Saturday and Sunday was better than in many of the last years. We had a good array of new products to show our dealers and  everyone was upbeat and hopeful. Now that we have the manufacturers and retailers excited, we have one more important group to get excited and that is consumers. Obtaining the mindshare and walletshare of consumers will be the key to success in 2012.”

“Martin Guitar’s NAMM booth was packed from the opening of the show to the close,” said Dick Boak, C.F. Martin & Co. Inc. “It was the busiest show that we’ve ever seen. We depend upon this important gathering to hold critical meetings with our dealers and distributors, and to write scheduled orders for the coming year. The business we conduct at the show is vital to our growth!”

“We had a wonderful show, said Lizabeth Gray, Santa Cruz Guitar Co.  ”Lots of sales for the next two years and we’re very pleased.  I would say that this has been one of most successful NAMM Shows ever!”

“We had a great show,” said John Sorenson, director of sales planning, Avedis Zildjian Company. “Our international representation was very strong. We had some great programs that we released this year and the uptick was very, very good. So we’re looking forward to a great 2012 for sure.”

Themed “Make It Count,” this year’s NAMM Show focused on innovation in the form of apps and technology products designed to make playing music more accessible and easier than ever for consumers.

“I think we did great,” said Trisha Lurie, Jammit.  ”Everyone liked what we are doing.  Great foot traffic in the App and Gaming Pavilion.  Our app was very well received at this year’s NAMM Show.”

“We had a really great show, said Bradley Walker of Agile Partners, another App Pavilion exhibitor.  ”Our app generated a ton of interest from guys in Poland, Spain and the UK this year.  I think we really got more hands-on this year.  The idea of running an amplifier on an iPhone or iPad is better understood and people now want to know how our app compares with the rest of the market.”

“We had a press event Wednesday night and we had a dealer party as well and those were very well received, we had a good turnout for that, so we’re having a very good show,” said Gloria Harris, Casio.  ”A lot of booth traffic. We had scheduled a lot of appointments and people came out and they saw the product and they loved it. We’re excited for the new year.”

“We had a great, great show,” said Chris DeMaria, Fishman Electronics. We had a couple new products to unveil and we had a lot of excitement, a lot of traffic, a lot of people came by to see what we’re up to and it was pretty exciting. It was a good year for us in 2011 and great to be back in 2012 and meet with our dealers and meet with some of our business partners and we had a great show. We’re seeing some new dealers and it’s a great opportunity for the existing dealers that we normally see at NAMM because we don’t always get out there to meet with them face-to-face and this show is great because it really sets the tone and allows a lot of people to get in the mindset for the New Year.”

“We had an amazingly great show—it was very successful,” said Marco Soccoli, director of artist relations, D’Addario. “We’d like to thank NAMM. Until next year!”

EVENT OF THE DAY: Campanile Wine Tasting, Third Sundays Each Month

From the Campanile website:

“The third Sunday of each month from 4 to 6pm the ‘wine team’ of Campanile joins together to do a tasting of the current offerings. We have now figured a way to make these tastings available to the general public.  The tasting will include 30 to 40 wines and are picked based on a theme. The best of which will show up on the wine list the following week.  Campanile will provide the food to accompany the wines. K&L will be pouring the wines with experts on hand to discuss the intricacy of the selections. This is not only fun, but also a learning experience. Tickets are $25.00 per person.”

THE WOODMAN IS COMING! THE WOODMAN IS COMING!: Woody Allen and his New Orleans Jazz Band, December 29, Royce Hall UCLA

For more than thirty-five years, Woody Allen and His New Orleans Jazz Band have been delighting audiences with a hot mix of New Orleans inspired music. The band’s sound is firmly rooted in the music that Woody Allen has loved since his childhood and draws inspiration from such legendary artists as Sidney Bechet, George Lewis, Johnny Dodds, Jimmie Noone and of course, Louis Armstrong.

-

Their repertoire consists of over 1200 songs and comprises a diverse collection of early 20th century popular tunes, hymns, spirituals, marches, blues and rags. In keeping with the spontaneous nature of the music every performance is an energetic collection of improvisations—there is no play list, nor do the musicians know what song Allen, in collaboration with band director Eddy Davis, will call out next. - Beginning as informal jam sessions and then becoming regular concerts every Monday night, the band has performed for thousands of New Yorkers and visitors from all over the world. For the last decade, the group has been regularly playing once a week at the Manhattan landmark hotel, The Carlyle.

-

In 1996, the band embarked on its first tour of Europe and was chronicled in the documentary film, “Wild Man Blues” and subsequent compact disc titled under the same. Since then, the band has returned to Europe on numerous occasions, most recently performing in Greece and Turkey.

-

This is the group’s first multi-city tour of California and Florida and they are pleased to bring their brand of New Orleans jazz to American audiences. Here is the Woody Allen ticket purchase link: http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/0B0047479AA547F1 Tickets available at all Ticketmaster outlets. To charge by phone, call (800) 745-3000.
